How is Burns Night Celebrated?
The Scottish tradition celebrated every January 25th to celebrate the life and work of the poet Robert Burns, Burns Night brings people together to enjoy traditional food, music, poetry, and cultural festivities.
The Burns Night supper is the centerpiece to the evening, traditionally featuring haggis (a savory pudding made from sheep’s heart, liver, and lungs), neeps (turnips), and tatties (potatoes). The arrival of the haggis is marked with the reading of the poem ‘Address to a Haggis’ and great fanfare.
In addition to the ‘Address to a Haggis’ other traditional poems are recited such as ‘Auld Lang Syne” and “The Selkirk Grace”. Alongside poems, celebratory toasts are given like “Toast to the Lassies” (honoring women) and a “Reply to the Toast to the Lassies” (often humorous and light-hearted). Another popular activity for a Burns Night party is Ceilidh dancing, a form of social folk dancing.

Before serving the main attraction (Haggis) consider a traditional dish for your starter. Scots broth is the perfect option for soup starter. Traditionally made with barley, stewing or braising cuts of lamb, mutton, or beef, root vegetables like carrots, swedes, or occasionally turnips, and dried pulses such as split peas and red lentils.
Cabbage and leeks are often added shortly before serving to preserve their texture, color and flavors. The soup is served with a garnish of fresh parsley.
